Because Hollywood likes to pretend it invented the movies. It didn’t. New Jersey did. Edison built the first studio — the Black Maria — in West Orange in 1893. By the 1910s Fort Lee was the film capital of the country, until the studios fled west to dodge Edison’s patent trust and California took the crown for good. Now the industry is coming home: Netflix, Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate are all building here.
