Here, in this lavishly illustrated history of the Best Dressed List, is the story of how the list originated and grew into the world-famous event it is today. And, for the first time ever, fashion doyenne and Best Dressed List founder, the late Ms. Eleanor Lambert contributes her personal story on the subject. Founded in 1940, the Best Dressed List was her brilliant publicity ploy to boost the drooping American fashion industry at the outset of World War II. It quickly became a highly visible and respected barometer of style, a “who’s who” of the most glamorous women in the world. Eleanor Lambert founded the International Best Dressed List in 1940. In 1943 she founded the Coty Awards, in the 1960s she helped organize the Council of Fashion Designers of America. She is credited with introducing many of the 20th century’s most popular fashion designers to the press, including Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent. Bettina Zilkha, who has a background in writing, marketing and advertising, is the international contributing editor for TheTrendReport.com. A trendsetter in her own right, Bettina has lived in both New York and Paris, where she planned special events for the American Center. Pucci
Author: Mariuccia Casadio
Publisher: Assouline Publishing
Publication Month: Spring, 2004

This exquisitely illustrated book tells the story of Marchese Emilio Pucci, who grew up in Palazzo Pucci on Via dei Pucci. In 1947 a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar took a photograph of the handsome aristocrat as he was skiing on the slopes of St. Moritz. When the editors of the magazine printed that he had designed the sleek skiwear he was wearing himself, inquiries from interested stores poured in. Inspired by the bright flags used during the Palio in nearby Siena, Pucci designed unmistakable prints using combinations of bright and pastel colors and geometric shapes on silk jersey, and fashioned them into dresses that flattered the female figure. The dresses were light and versatile, and the international nomads who started jet-setting in the early sixties found that they could pack a lot of outfits by Pucci in just one suitcase. Pretty soon Pucci prints appeared everywhere, on shoes, purses, luggage, billfolds, bathing suits, nightgowns, and bras and bikini underpants. In the seventies Pucci was elected to the Italian parliament, and he also began labeling and selling the wine produced on his estate in Chianti, owned by the Pucci family since the 13th century. M.A.C Deck of Cards
Photographer: Richard Lohr
Publisher: Assouline Publishing

First there was a deck of cards. Inspired by the irreverent imaging of M.A.C Cosmetics, the creative teams of M.A.C and Assouline got some of the most renowned designers, musicians, and artist to create unique body designs that became a provocative deck of cards. All the designs submitted were not only original and creative but reflected the individual personalities of the well-known participants. Models and artist donated their time and subjected themselves to long hours of nude body paintings, re-creating the images that photographer Richards Lohr has captured with his camera. The M.A.C Deck of Cards created such a positive reaction that Assouline decided to publish a book of these incredible images. As with the original playing cards, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the M.A.C AIDS Fund. The fund was started in 1994 and has raised millions of dollars through the sale of M.A.C Viva Glam Lipsticks to help men, women, and children living with HIV and AIDS. RELIGION
The Great Religions; Essential Questions
Author: Marc-Alain Ouaknin, Dom Robert Le Gall, Claude B. Levenson, Malek Chebel
Introduction: Bruce Feiler
Publisher: Assouline Publishing
Publication Month: April/ May, 2004
The Great Religions: Essential Questions is an invitation to discover and better understand four of the most influential spiritual faiths: Judaism, Catholicism, Islam and Tibetan Buddhism. In his introductory essay, Bruce Feiler— the best-selling author of six books, including Walking the Bible and Learning to Bow— explains why religion has moved to the forefront of public discourse. Feiler, whose most recent book, Abraham, was featured on the cover of Time magazine and has generated interfaith discussions around the world, also explores the rise of interfaith relationships in our increasingly divisive world. Why does God allow evil? What is the hereafter? Is religion necessary? These are some of the essential questions to which the four authors, each representing a different belief, respond in a clear and accessible manner. This book offers a contemporary response to our spiritual questions while helping us to decipher the ritual and cultural symbols that constitute our heritage. Rabbi Marc-Alain Ouaknin is the director of the Aleph Center for Research and Jewish Studies in Paris. Dom Robert Le Gall has been Abbot of Kergonan in brittany since 1983 and is also the author of books and articles on liturgy and spirituality. A Slavicist and Orientalist by training, Claude B. Levinson translated the teachings of the Dalai Lama into French. Trained as an anthropologist and psychoanalyst, Mark Chebel runs the Ceériamus, a center for the study of Arab-Muslim culture in Paris.
