Originally published in 1992, Pools is a modern classic of design photography, a timeless and inspiring collection of evocative imagery.
Inspired by a desire to design a new pool for her own Long Island backyard, Kelly Klein sought out and put together the most arresting and iconic photographs of swimming pools in all their various forms to create this unique and stunning book. The photographs are as inspiring as they are moving, revealing an incredible wealth of styles and designs in climates and cultures across the globe, and evoking the sensations of rest and nostalgia, the clarity of water and light, the coexistence of coolness and warmth, and the insinuations of sex and romance that can bring such character to a swimming pool. Included are pools in all shapes, sizes, colors, and settings, from Tangiers and Miami to the ancient magnificence of Hadrian’s Villa; from Coney Island to the Côte d’Azur; from the robber baron 1880s through the prosperous 1990s, and captured by great photographers such as Lartigue, Stieglitz, Munkacsi, Weston, Mapplethorpe, and Weber. CALIFORNIA MEDITERRANEAN
AUTHOR: PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELBA LEVICK; TEXT BY MARC APPLETON
PUBLISHER: RIZZOLI NEW YORK ISBN 13: 978-0-8478-2915-6, HC: 0-8478-2915-4 U.S. LIST PRICE: $50.00 HARDCOVER 9” x 11 1/4”; 208 PAGES, 200 COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS
A sumptuous collection of California houses designed and decorated in the universally beloved Mediterranean style.
In the early 20th-century, architects designing houses for the balmy climate of Southern California were influenced by the style of the villas and palaces that dominated the architecture of Italy, France, Spain, Greece, and Morocco, and a few other North African locales. The resulting style—noted for its pleasing combination of simplicity and dignity, for its often asymmetrical and undecorated facades—reflected romantic, European forms, and yet distinguished itself by adding American ingenuity. Prime examples of this include Villa Narcissa, widely celebrated for its unimposing grandeur, and Casa Leon, with its stunning hillside location and ocean views. Included here are residences by noted architects such as Julia Morgan, Bertram Goodhue, Addison Mizner, George Washington Smith, Wallace Neff, and others. While some of the houses are lavishly decorated villas with lush landscaping, others are more spare, creations; what all these interpretations of the California Mediterranean style have in common is an indoor-outdoor approach to living.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Melba Levick is a widely published and exhibited photographer who works and lives in Paris, Los Angeles, and Spain. She is the photographer for Rizzoli’s Casa California, Estate Gardens of California, Great Gardens in Small Spaces, and many others. Marc Appleton is principal/president of Appleton & Associates, a Santa Monica-based architecture firm. He is a member of numerous organizations, including the California Preservation Foundation and the Historical Society of Southern California.

Whimsical and inspirational vignettes written and illustrated by American fashion icon Cynthia Rowley.
Following the success of her Swell books (which have sold more than 300,000 copies), Rowley’s new book recounts her personal “growing up” lessons—from humorous childhood memories to fantastical experiences. Filled with her own hand-drawn illustrations made especially for this book, it includes such stories as: Radically Clad-Plaid Dad (How her science teacher’s father buys 15 pairs of plaid pants on sale and after a botched experiment everything he touches turns to tartan); Badge Happy (How this preteen over-achiever petitions the Girl Scouts of America to add new badge categories because she already has all the others); Cold Comfort (How her mother puts their pillows in the fridge during the summer to chill them out before bedtime—which leads to them putting everything in the fridge like T-shirts and sneakers); and Luxury Camping (How her fashion sense survived in the wilderness; twig hairstyles and matchstick necklaces—not a good combination!). The book also gives lots of serendipitous advice such as How to Turn your Bathtub into a Wishing Well; Why Dropping Scissors is Bad Luck; and much more.

The first book to show the provocative posters and groundbreaking graphics of the Black Panther Party.
The Black Panther Party for Self Defense, formed in the aftermath of the assassination of Malcolm X in 1965, remains one of the most controversial movements of the 20th-century. Founded by the charismatic Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, the party sounded a defiant cry for an end to the institutionalized subjugation of African Americans. The Black Panther newspaper was founded to articulate the party’s message and artist Emory Douglas became the paper’s art director and later the party’s Minister of Culture. Douglas’s artistic talents and experience proved a powerful combination: his striking collages of photographs and his own drawings combined to crate some of the era’s most iconic images, like that of Newton with his signature beret and large gun set against a background of a blood-red star, which could be found blanketing neighborhoods during the 12 years the paper existed. This landmark book brings together a remarkable lineup of party insiders who detail the crafting of the party’s visual identity.

Trends from the 70’s and 80’s nostalgically celebrate what was once thought to be cool, sexy—and studly.
Fashion is a fickle friend. Smooth Operator is an anti-style bible that catalogs (and celebrates) the very worst male fashion trends of the 70’s and 80’s. It is studded with...”studs” photographed in their natural habitat of cool bars, poolside lounge chairs, hopelessly fuel-inefficient sports cars, and...er, menswear catalogs.
This pictorial celebration charts the changing fashion trends adorned by the hunks who were “macho, macho men” at a time when the Village People were chart topers. Later, they were the Aqua Velva men with the latest in velour track suits, and ultimately they graduated to the white Miami Vice lounge-suit without socks and big hair. Today’s waxed and moisturized “metrosexual” will be agape at the copious display of chest hair on the “smooth operators” featured in underwear styles now deemed to be causes of impotence. Nylon no-wrinkle leisure suits, kimono-style sleep-wear, chest hair revealing one-piece lounge wear, the vicissitudes of hairstyles, slip-on shoes, bikini underwear in bold colors—flick through these pages and relieve two decades of men’s fashion disasters. Funny and nostalgic, this book is the ideal tongue in-cheek gag gift for birthdays and anti-Valentine’s day as well as a rueful consolation for your best friend’s worst date yet.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Richard Jarman studied history at Oxford University and is the author of Bad Fashion and No Place Like Home. He lives in London.
