Anna Fairfax and Richard Sammons are at the forefront of a movement among architects today who draw inspiration from the wellspring of the classical traditions in architecture. They have developed a body of work that reflects and adheres to the long-held theories of proportion and order passed down through many past generations of scholarship and practice. The firm’s office also served as the headquarters for Henry Hope Reid’s Classical America, the only organization offering an alterative to modernist aesthetics until the establishment of the Institute of Classical Architecture in 1992.
This architectural monograph showcases some of the most refined and elegant new classical residences of the last decade in America, an increasingly popular form for new homes, restoration, and renovations. The twenty-four projects in this volume show the firm’s consistent focus on classical architectural beauty, whether the chosen style be Palladian, Tuscan, Mediterranean, Georgian, Adamesque, Neoclassical, British or Dutch Colonial, Colonial Revival, or even East Coast Shingle Style, in all of which Fairfax&Sammons are eminently proficient. The projects selected out of the firm’s large body of work include country houses located in Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and Florida, including the renovation of town houses and apartments in New York City—all presented in new color photography.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: PRAIRIE HOUSES
AUTHOR: ALAN WEINTRAUB TEXT: ALAN HESS CONTRIBUTOR: KATHRYN SMITH
PUBLISHER: RIZZOLI  INTERNATIONAL PUBLICATIONS
ISBN:  0-8478-2858-1  U.S. LIST PRICE: $50.00 HARDCOVER 10 X 10 ”; 272 PAGES, 150 COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS
With the advent of Prairie style architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright embarked on a journey that would forever change the course of architecture. During this extraordinarily prolific period, roughly the first quarter of the twentieth century, Wright built the first great modern American houses. He cast aside many of the conventions of the past, opening up interiors spaces so that there might be a more subtle flow of rooms. The plans for Prairie style architecture were based on a tartan plaid of main spaces and secondary spaces, of public rooms and circulation spaces. Their decentralized asymmetry did not follow the Beaux Arts insistence on a primary, often dominating, focal point—a vestige of its roots as a symbolic architecture for divine-right royalty. Following Wright’s philosophy, Prairie design was emphatically democratic and non-hierarchical. Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Houses comprehensively demonstrates this philosophy. Focusing on interiors and details, this book features more than 70 Prairie style houses and other buildings, still extant, in lavish, full-color photography.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Alan Weintraub is a widely published architectural photographer whose books include Frank Lloyd Wright The Houses, Bay Area Style, The Architecture of John Lautner, and Oscar Niemeyer Houses, among others.  Alan Hess is an architect and architecture critic for the San Jose Mercury News, whose books include Frank Lloyd Wright The Houses, The Architecture of John Lautner, Googie: Fifties Coffee Shop Architecture, and Oscar Niemeyer Houses, among others.  Kathryn Smith is an architecture historian, preservation consultant, author, and lecturer.

This thought-provoking volume transports readers to France of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, beginning with Napoleon’s love of perfume and the erotic importance he attached to it, through the lore and symbolism fragrance enjoyed in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Europe. By the early twentieth century, perfume’s place as one of France’s most important luxury industries was recognized and celebrated, and timeless fragrances – such as Chanel No. 5, Shalimar, Arpeges, and Joy – were launched. The distinctive bottles for these new essences and the art movements that inspired their design are detailed throughout the book, as are paintings, poetry, and literature that reveal the power of perfume and its ability to recall the past and evoke sensuality.  According to nineteenth-century perfumer Eugene Rimmel “the history of perfume is, in some manner, the history of civilization.” Through fascinating text accompanied by gorgeous imagery, including packaging, labels, and advertisements, Perfume: Joy Scandal, Sin explores perfume’s impact on history, culture, society, art and attitudes.

He is an honorary member of the Société Française  des Parfumeurs and winner of a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. Sarasota in the 1950s was a small community graced with an alluring natural beauty. What set it apart from so many Florida beachfront towns was the concentration of artists, writers, and architects who gathered there – including author MacKinley Kantor and architects Paul Rudolf and Ralph Twitchella unique confluence of talented and daring architects coupled with a hip crowd willing to take risks. Sarasota was a place in which innovation and experimentation were the order of the day, a place where an architect might run into the local watering hole to shout: “I just invented the sliding glass door.”  Such was the confluence of art and architecture that laid the groundwork for the Sarasota School of architecture, so named after the fact by architect Gene Leedy at an American Institute of Architecture (AIA) conference in the 1980s to refer to the unique architecture of this region, an architecture that is wonderfully responsive to Sarasota’s sub-tropical environment and which has achieved international importance for its beauty, intelligence, and style. Today, Sarasota’s treasures are being rediscovered by lovers of innovative architecture, who are buying and restoring these prized homes; but also, unfortunately, by developers, who are recklessly knocking them down. Sarasota Modern, the first book of its kind to focus exclusively on this vibrant community, offers the reader an intimate look in to the stunning houses as they are lived in today.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Andrew Weaving is an expert on 20th-century architecture, furniture, and design. He was co-author of Living with Mid-Century Style, among others, and owns a 1956 Sarasota School house in Winter Haven designed by Gene Leedy. He lives in London.

The Virgin Mary is one of the most revered women in the history of the world, and yet amazingly, there is relatively little known about the details of her life. This beautiful book, adorned throughout with gold ink, retraces her steps throughout the biblical narrative. Mary comes alive to the reader through striking artistic representations that range from the origins of Western art to the iconography of the twentieth century. From Titan, Raphaël, and Fra Angelico to Van Eyck, Albrecht Dürer, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the most famous as well as lesser-known representations of Mary are brought together with sculptures, frescoes, and stone statues that recreate scenes from her life. Biblical and literary references to the Virgin Mother have been woven into the author’s account of the life of Mary. Her history is unveiled in a rich collection of the words and images that have defined her throughout the centuries of Christianity. Constructing a passionate biography of Mary and a captivating portrait of the time in which she lived, this book also offers insight into the symbolic dimension of this key figure and the universal nature of her history.  This exquisitely produced book is a celebration of Mary: it is a gift to commemorate the Christmas season with reverence, pay homage to motherhood, and provide hours of inspirational reflection.

Sumptuously illustrated with over 300 photographs, this is the Venice that guidebooks do not show – the Venice that people who live there love best. Exploring the history, architecture, art, day-to-day life, and the hidden treasure of this beautiful city, the comprehensive scope of this attractive boxed set is what distinguishes it from others of its kind. The first volume explores the historical legends of Venice as well as the Venice of the Doges and of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The second volume covers the city’s art and architecture in depth – from St Mark’s Square to the biennales of contemporary art. In the third volume, the reader is taken inside the city itself – from its festivals, artisanal glassware, and edible delicacies, to the mythic cafés, restaurants, and bars where locals while away the day. Enticing accounts of the most memorable sights, sounds smells, and tastes of the city make this a unique insider’s resource.
