The fantastic creative energy of the 1960s took off with a burst of black and white: La Dolce Vita by Federico Fellini. An instant cult film, it became a great classic of modernity and continues to affect generation after generation, legendary yet always contemporary. A baroque frieze of a high-strung Rome, where decadence and despair, missteps and glamour, sophistication and the search for absolutes, are painted with powerful images imbued with a memorable, unique and prophetic beauty. Dolce Vita Style draws on the history of those that inspired the film in the theatrically Rome of the ‘50s and sums up the innumerable influences that this cult film has had on so many of those in the worlds of movies, popular music, society life, and fashion from Valentino to Dolce & Gabbana. Image by image, this book retraces the astonishing itinerary of a work that is a supreme emblem and a source of inexhaustible style.
Palm Springs Style
By Aline Coquelle
Price: $40; ISBN 2 84323 743 2; 7 3/4 x 11/ 19.7 x 27.9; 176 Pages; 100 Color and B&W Photographs; Hardcover, Jacket
Dean Martin, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Kirk Douglas, and Elvis Presley made it their stomping grounds. Wildly free in the post-war years, Palm Springs was all about luxury, parties, sex and sun. It was inspired by the designs of European architects like Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Walter Gropius; and for such American tycoons as Raymond Loewy, Bob Hope, and Howard Hughes, they created slick residences that blended perfectly into the huge Mojave desert. This book takes a look at Neutra’s Kaufmann House, Lautner’s Elrod House (where Diamonds Are Forever was shot), the Frey House II (which is home to the Palm Springs Desert Museum today), Frey’s Loewy Residence, and all the essential places in Palm Springs. As a bonus, there is the sharp address book everybody’s fighting over (vintage furniture, hotels, resorts, perfect motels from the ‘40s to the ‘60s). If you are looking for a Palm Springs revival, you’ll find it here.

There’s so much more to serving a cocktail than shaken, not stirred. In a lusciously illustrated volume, Amy Sacco - the ultimate cocktail cognoscente - restores the spirit of this very sexy drink, sharing favorite recipes from her exclusive nightclubs including Lot 61 and Bungalow 8. The restaurant and bar owner credited with converting New York City’s Chelsea into the go-to party destination also reminisces on the most important “cocktail” moments of the past decade, and offers tips on how to serve them with flair. Compendium of Interior Styles
By François Baudot
Price: $70; ISBN 2 84323 720 3; 10 1/2 x 13 1/4/ 23 x 30 cm; 432 Pages; 300 Illustrations; Hardcover, Jacket
Aside from clothes, the most immediate extension of the human body is the décor in which it evolves. From interior architecture to interior life, the distance is often slight. It is to this coming together of the mental and the ornamental, as well as to the dialogue between form and content, that this work, with its abundant and eloquent iconography, is dedicated. The chapters wed the chronology of the styles that followed one another using, as examples, the most beautiful houses in the world. The first part stats with the Medieval era and ends with the twentieth century, while the second is devoted to the roots of design from the Belle Époque to contemporary aesthetics. Each style has its own elegance, its function, and its reason for being. Each style comes back, at one time or another, to haunt new decades short of references. This, the periods overlap each other: yesterday via nineteenth century’s historicism, and today with the rise of all the retro fashions. But regardless of the choices one makes, what is fascinating in the organization of an architectural volume is that it always speaks of its own time. And it often does so very well.
ART
Video Game Art
By Nic Kelman
Price: $29.95; ISBN 2 84323 729 7; 6 x 8 1/2/ 15.5 x 21.5 cm; 300 Pages; 250 Color and B&W Photographs; Flexibound
By 2008 most analysts predict that the video game industry will be larger than the film and music industries combined. Games today already command Hollywood budgets and teams dozens of artists, writers, musicians, and designers...and yet almost nothing has been written about their art and design from a non-technical viewpoint. Video Game Art is a first look from an art history and post-modern cultural perspective at the influences behind, and achievements of today’s genre-defining video games. Examining themes such as character, environment, and the growing place of video games among more traditional art forms, and including commentary from luminaries of the field and often unpublished behind-the-scene art of both past and upcoming games, Video Game Art is a pioneering foray into what promises to be the dominant art form of the coming century.

The Sculptures of Picasso
By Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Photos by Brassai
Price: $120; ISBN 2 84323 788 2; 13 x 16 2/3/ 32.8 x 42.4 cm; 120 Pages; 70 Illustrations; Hardcover, Slipcase
This highly luxurious publication presents the sculptures of Picasso photographed by Brassai, one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century. An authentic text written for this work in 1948 by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, the former art dealer of Picasso, is also included. Brassai met Picasso in 1932 when he was commissioned to take a series of pictures of the artist’s studio and of some plaster sculptures done at the Boisgeloup for the review Minotaure. Several years later he was again contacted to photograph Picasso’s work for the first book published on the subject of the artist’s sculptures. Hence, between 1932 and 1946, Brassai photographed all of Picasso’s sculpted works. This long-term working relationships led to a fruitful exchange between the two artists on the respective nature of photography and sculpture, which is reflected in this volume. The Sculptures of Picasso is an atypical vision of lesser known works by Picasso. Indeed, the medium used to depict the sculptures is nearly as unsettling as the objects themselves, and the confusion is emphasized by the contrast between flatness and fullness.
Planets: On Some Remarkable Nebulae
Paintings By Thierry W. Despont
Price: $150; ISBN 2 84323 795 5; 13 x 16 2/3/ 32.8 x 42.4 cm; 120 Pages; 80 Color and B&W Photographs; Hardcover, Slipcase
Combining geometrical purity and gestural grandeur, Thierry W. Despont conjugates his architectural skills and painter’s virtuosity in this spectacular collection of majestic, daunting and singularly attracting orbs, turning his struggle with corrosive materials and richly textured pigments into a spiritual achievement. A compound of restless collage and swirling pigments, each orb is animated by a life of its own: colorful magma breaking through the scorched surface of the canvas, white streaks flickering against the encroaching and abysmal darkness of a stark black background that seems about to engulf it. At the same time dynamic and mesmerizing, they are mysterious and numinous, intimate and remote; a lesson in the “abstract sublime,” they conjure up the immemorial awe of man in front of a cosmic world he both reveres and dreads. Beyond the eruptive, cataclysmic forces animating them, the orbs are inwardly radiant, animated by a life that seems to emerge from their depths, and conjure up a paradoxical harmony that embues them with an ultimate metaphysical dimension.

So Far, So Goude
By Jean-Paul Goude and Patrick Mauriés
Price: $65; ISBN 2 84323 755 6; 9 1/2 x 11 3/8/ 24 x 29 cm; 360 Pages; 350 Color and B&W Photographs; Hardcover, Jacket
So Far, So Goude represents Goude’s work from the late 1960’s up to the present. It is, in fact, an artist’s autobiography, the life told through the work, since Goude has never been able or willing to separate his person growth and personal desires from his art. Beginning with the strongest influences of his early years, it moves with unusual honesty and good deal of humour through his teenage love of dance (his mother was a Broadway dancer), sport and jazz; his youthful hangouts in the sixties; his years at art school and his discovery of drawing as a means of seduction; his time at Esquire; his revolutionary work with Grace Jones for Jungle Fever; his videos from MTV and for Azzedine Alaia; his advertising work for Lee Cooper, Chanel, Cacharel; his involvement with the Bicentennial Parade; his wife and family...
Selected and arranged by Jean-Paul Goude himself, written by Goude and Patrick Mauries, So Far So Goude is the definitive book on the work of an extraordinarily innovative, talented and unorthodox man. With more than 350 illustrations in full color, it will be endlessly fascinating to all those interested in fashion illustration, photography, and all avenues of commercial design and advertising.
Lost Divas
By André Tubeuf
Price: $55; ISBN 2 84323 735 1; 10 1/2 x 14 1/2/ 27 x 37 cm; 96 Pages; 70 Illustrations; Hardcover, Jacket with CD
This book tells all about a lost, authentically legendary species: the divas. They were the first movie stars. Before Pickford and Garbo, there was Geraldine Farrar, Lina Cavalieri, and Mary Garden. They were the most stunning opera singers, their personalities perhaps even bigger than their voices. Their success and their lives filled the gossip columns. Their fans loved them, grand dukes covered them in jewels. The represented both the splendorous excesses of an era of elegance and luxury, and its swan’s song. There is almost nothing that survives of them today. Thankfully, their image remains and reveals all. Along with unpublished pictures of the greatest divas of this century, rediscover their voices in the accompanying CD produced specially for this publication.
Rooster
By Philippe Schlienger
Price: $55; ISBN 2 84323 741 6; 10 1/2 x 14 1/2/ 27 x 37 cm; 80 Pages; 50 Color Photographs; Hardcover, Jacket
Philippe Schlienger’s roosters stare at us with an aggressiveness and an anxiety common to all birds. But what a shock to be faced with these roosters dressed for a parade! Blazing, dazzling, glittering, they are fantastic. One has a stiffened and colored crest standing like a punk hairdo. Another sports a drooping comb that looks like genital organs. All were bred by a passionate collector of roosters. The reader cannot help being confused by such random shapes, colors and textures. The original framing and distinctness of the pictures are a trademark of the artist. He has created animal icons, new kinds of fashion victims. The malicious eye of Philippe Schlienger has succeeded in emphasizing the eccentricity of the rooster. The narcissism of the brave beast is highly amusing; in a nearly human way, the new icons are fun, posh, posing, and swanky.

Something to Hold
By Sharon Stone with photographs by Mimi Craven
Price: $24.95; ISBN 2 84323 754 8; 5 1/2 x 7 7/8/ 14 x 20 cm; 96 Pages; Hardcover with flaps
After many years of traveling all over the world, campaigning for amFAR and meeting people in need of comfort, best friends photographer Mimi Craven and actress activist Sharon Stone decided to create Something to Hold, a book about guardian angels and their ability to help anyone, even the most isolated people. Each one of us is attached to an angel who guides us and protects us from birth to death. These guardian angels, present in most cultures since the Greeks and Romans, are our daily companions. Once we communicate with them, their light energy may help us. The images of this very unique book show different representations of angels, and inspired the reflective text written by Sharon Stone: “They encompass the feeling that I have when I meet others who are looking for some kind of solace,” she says. A book to revel in, over and over, as much for its message as for its emotionally charged beauty. Completing this testimony is a guide in which readers can identify the angel associated with their dates of birth. The release of Something to Hold coincides with the actresses’ tenth anniversary of working towards a cure with the American Foundation for AIDS Research, to whom they will be donating all their proceeds from the book.

Rebel Style
By G. Bruce Boyer
Price: $18.95; ISBN 2 84323 731 3; 6 x 8 1/2/ 15.5 x 21.5 cm; 80 pages; 60 Color and B&W Photographs; Hardcover, Jacket
Between the end of World War II and the election of John F. Kennedy there was a tremendous shift in Hollywood film: a fresh wave of actors (with Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Paul Newman, and James Dean) whose talent and lives seemed to be inseparable in their work, came to the forefront of film-making. This Rebel style brought a completely new attitude and look to the screen; the leather jacket and provocative stare of a Brando, the prole clothes and the broodingly cool demeanor of a Clift became the aesthetic correlative of an American version of the existentialist view of life. G. Bruce Boyer analyzes the sartorial and philosophical revolution brought about by the representatives of this first counterculture, and the evolution of the Rebel style.

Jackie’s beauty and the saga of her life; JFK’s allure and his modern understanding of politics: all these elements combine to create a sensitive album of two exceptional personalities who became a legendary couple. Who were the Kennedys? Numerous biographies have been written on one of the most glamorous couple that ever existed. Yet very few have tried to show their life in a simple, direct way: with pictures. It might precisely be an adequate approach to understanding what JFK and Jackie used to be and live. Filled with pictures of the couple’s public and private life, The Kennedy’s – a slipcase comprising Jackie and JFK – reveals the underlying simplicity and authenticity of two people the world insisted on turning into legends. Jackie’s beauty and saga of her life; JFK allure and his modern understanding of politics: all these elements combine to create a sensitive album of two exceptional personalities who made a legendary couple.

While Andy Warhol is known for creating icons, it is Raymond Loewy who built monuments. At once an engineer and a visionary, this master of streamlined design integrated movement into his designs in what would become a characteristic American way. Indeed, his drawings of the Coca Cola truck, the Greyhound bus, the package of Lucky Strike cigarettes, the Studebaker automobile, and the bullet-nose train molded our vision of twentieth-century American iconography. Illustrated with photographs of Loewy’s most notable designs, this memoir pays a tribute to a man who shaped the image of an entire nation with his pencil strokes.

Everyone is fascinated by Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France, by her temperament and independence, her escapades and frivolities. A great lover, rebellious and defiant, she escapes into games and lived grandly, angering her subject, who never forgave her for her excessive spending. Reviled by those who once adored her, she spent her last days imprisoned in the Conciergerie, but was royal right up to her death. From her powdered pink boudoirs to her apartments filled with lacquered furniture, from her Trianon, which she refurnished entirely and to which she brought her lovers, to the laiterie, where she took pride in playing the farmer, this book is a visual introduction to the women who influenced her time with her style, independence, mystery, and glamour.

Piero Fornasetti is often described as a visionary. A Milan artist, Fornasetti was at the same time a painter, sculptor, designer, craftsman, and an engraver of art books. In his lifetime, he created more than 11,000 items, most of which are one-of-a kind. It is actually said that his production of objects and furniture is one of the largest in the twentieth century. Perpetuating the workshop tradition today is his son Barnaba, who has revived his most popular pieces and created new ones. In an illustrated Memoire devoted to Piero Fornasetti’s work, the book critically discusses his contribution to twentieth century art and design, through the vision of Philippe Starck, a true amateur of this style.
