Magritte; The Empire of Images by Pierre Sterckx.
Magritte said his sole goal was to think in images and
then to combine them. He didn't want his works analyzed and he distrusted
any interpretation of them. Yet his most famous paintings confront us
with puzzling mysteries and often seem to refer to something secret, which
we naturally want to uncover: a giant apple in a room; bells floating
in the air; gentlemen in bowler hats raining down; petrified fish; the
face of a woman with breasts for eyes and pubic hair for a month. Magritte's
intent was to traverse the mysterious evolution that gave rise to these
images and their paradoxical associations, in an attempt to describe the
reciprocal connections between art and life. This type of critique of
Magritte's work has never before been attempted. The author's goal is
to in no way reduce our delight in this enigmatic universe, which is,
at the same time, also lucid and reflexive. This magnificent volume, in
vellum with a cloth slipcase, is a limited edition. Presenting all the
major works of this painter, this book is sure to endure as one of the
most beautiful ever published on Magritte.
Pierre Sterckx, an art historian and critic, is a lecturer
at L'Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. He's a contributor
to Beaux-Arts Magazine, Art Press and Télérama
and in 1996 won the CNRS grand prize for his script for the cd-rom Le
Mystere Magritte.
