Dada. This onomatopoeia suggesting a child's babbling
started one of the most important mutations in the history of art. But
what is Dada?
Born of the First World War, Dada is a movement bringing together both
artists and writers. From Zurich in 1916, it spread rapidly to New York,
Berlin, Hanover, Cologne and finally to Paris, where it died in 1924.
Because of the diversity of its creations, the Dada movement is not an "ism" of
the art world: there is no Dada "style," although a single
spirit does govern the works of this movement which is at once anti-conformist,
anti-bourgeois, and above all, anti-artistic. That's the spirit the author
would like to explain through the texts, works of art and a few of the
movement's protagonists: Arp, Duchamp, Ernst, Man Ray, Picabia,
Schwitters and Tzara.
Born in Brussels in 1968, Emmanuelle
de l'Écotais received
her Ph.D. in art history at Paris IV, the Sorbonne. She participated
in the Dictionnaire mondial de la photographie, des origines à nos
jours [World Dictionary of Photography, from its origins to today] (Larousse,
1994) and in the Collection de photographies du musée national
d'Art moderne 1905-1948 [Collection of photographs from the musée
d'Art moderne 1905-1948] (Centre Georges-Pompidou, 1996). Commissioner
of the exhibit Man Ray, la photographie à l'envers [Man Ray, photography
backwards] (Paris, Grand-Palais, 1998), she was also co-director and
co-author of the work bearing the same title (Seuil/Centre Georges Pompidou,
1998) as well as the exhibit's album (Centre Georges-Pompidou, 1998).
